HUM 204 – Effective and Correct Use of the Turkish Language

Course Content:

The course aims to raise awareness about the correct use of standard Turkish spelling and to provide students with public speaking and presentation skills. The content consists of practical training including diction knowledge for beautiful and effective speech.

Topics Covered:

Week 1: Information on course goals and objectives, introduction
Week 2: Language types in terms of usage, causes of incorrect spelling and pronunciation in Turkish, the relationship between the new Turkish alphabet and phonetics, examples of common word errors
Week 3: The function of spelling guides, word preferences from a sociolinguistic perspective, words of foreign origin, examples of incorrect elongation/shortening/confusion
Week 4: Article discussion
Week 5: Article discussion
Week 6: Article discussion
Week 7: Midterm Exam
Week 8: What is diction? The phonetic structure of Turkish, definition and importance of speech, articulation errors
Week 9: Turkish phonetics, mispronounced sounds, the problem of localization in standard Turkish
Week 10: Technical features of speech: correct breathing, stress, intonation, body language, and public speaking
Week 11: Poetry and text performance applications, evaluations based on student presentations
Week 12: Poetry and text performance applications, evaluations based on student presentations
Week 13: Poetry and text performance applications, evaluations based on student presentations
Week 14: End-of-term evaluation, evaluations based on student presentations
